Some thoughts on the latest issue of 'GEM Case Studies': (editor Jo Roberts: casestudies@gem.org.uk)
1. Excellent article (pp.10-11) on 'Cardboard Castles', from Conisbrough Castle in Yorkshire - children were given loads of flat-packed boxes, tubes, etc. etc., and after a visit to Conisbrough were asked to recreate the main features of the castle in a large-scale model. "What we really enjoyed was the ownership the children took over the space and their work. ... The key lesson learned for us is that the children's imaginations provided a much richer experience than painstaking attention to detail and trying to create authentic replications. ..." Further information from James Brunt: james@responsiblefishing.co.uk
2.Glad to see kids from Barrow engaging with Shakespeare at Blackwell's Arts and Crafts House (Cumbria). Pp.6-7 by Esther Rutter et al..
3. Two articles from Oxford. One (pp.8-9) addressed the use iPads in art visits for sixth-formers. Why do they not use androiud or other models which are much cheaper? This was excluded from the project. Apple seem to have commandered the tablet narrative.
Notably, two of the aboive are from the North of England. Unfortunately they are the only two! The others are from London, Portsmouth, Oxford, London, Cambridge, London, Nottingham, Bath and Bristol. So the 60% (?) of the UK that is nearer to Edinburgh than to London got less than 20% of the representation. Typical!
